The South Wing at Clifton Hall is part of one of the most outstanding Grade I listed buildings in Nottinghamshire. The Clifton family trace their lineage back to Alvaredus de Clifton, a Norman knight who was appointed Warden of Nottingham Castle in the time of William the Conqueror, and who took his name from the south Nottinghamshire village in which he settled. Sir Gervase de Clifton purchased the manors of Clifton and Wilford from the de Rodes family in the late 13th century.
While the history of Clifton Hall dates back to the 11th century, the Hall was remodelled in the late 18th century. The Hall was owned by the Clifton family, Lords of the Manor of Clifton, from the late 13th century to the mid- 20th century.
On the edge of charming Clifton Village, the South Wing of Clifton Hall is set at the top of a private gravelled driveway with landscaped gardens overlooking the River Trent and mature, established woodlands sheltering the generous lawned landscape.
The imposing entrance to Clifton Hall transports you back in time. As you enter the breath-taking 44ft high Octagon Hall, which is, by far, one of the most spectacular architectural features of Clifton Hall, with a magnificent domed ceiling it was built in the former watchtower and is a room of perfect symmetry, housing life-size statues of the Roman Gods Neptune, Apollo, Diana and Bacchus. The ground floor also boasts a further five reception rooms and an elegant drawing room.
The beautiful kitchen features a classically styled island that overlooks the landscaped gardens to the South.
On the first floor, an impressive wood-panelled master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom has fabulous views of the grounds. Four more stunning bedrooms, tastefully decorated, have access to three very large bathrooms. You are also spoiled for choice with two staircases leading you to the second floor.
The top floor hosts another five bedrooms and three bathrooms. The large playroom/ reception room has striking exposed beams and low-level windows giving the room a real character.
Clifton Hall’s South Wing is steeped in history. The Great Chamber, also known as the Drawing Room, was completed in 1632. The unique and breath-taking ceiling design is another of the Hall’s striking features. The room also houses the well-known historical ‘Clifton Fireplace,’ with its intricate carvings of the Clifton Family crest. It is believed that musical performances, banquets and dances would take place in this room.
The Red Room, also known as the Silk Room, used by Lady Clifton to hang red silk that was brought back from China takes you on a journey through the nine generations of the Clifton’s family. The architecture and intricate design of the room can only be appreciated in person.
King Charles was Clifton Hall’s most illustrious guest, and the Pages’ Room (where pages awaited to be summoned) is where the King’s pages slept to guard the king. This room again undoubtedly deserves a careful visit.
Clifton Village is accessed from a quiet lane through the village green, linking it to the A453 between Nottingham and the M1. The village is less than 1 mile from Nottingham Trent University, 6 miles to Junction 24 of the M1, less than 10 miles to East Midlands Airport and 4 miles to the centre of Nottingham. East Midlands Parkway train station is less than 2 miles from Clifton Hall and makes commuting to London St Pancras a swift journey of just under 90 minutes.
Clifton Green is of local note in the spring with an impressive display of daffodils, and in the summer, it hosts the occasional game of cricket. Well-established trees shield the Green from the A453. May Day celebrations take place on the green every year, organized by the Clifton Village Residents’ Association. A tree-lined park referred to as the Grove, runs behind the village. Once the main thoroughfare into Nottingham, this now allows residents to go for peaceable strolls while enjoying with excellent views of the river and valley below.
Clifton Village is also close to a selection of nationally rated private schools; Nottingham Boys and Girls High Schools are both six miles north, whilst Loughborough Grammar School is 9 miles to the south.
As well as being a Grade I listed building, the Hall is part of the Clifton Village Conservation Area. From 1958 to 1976, housed Clifton Hall Girls Grammar School. Nottingham Trent University then used the Hall until 2002. It was sold to a private buyer in 2003 who built houses on the grounds and converted Clifton Hall into two entirely independent luxury homes.

A little more history….
One of the first Cliftons of note was Sir Gervase Clifton, his unusual Christian name would be handed down to eleven other prominent members of the Clifton family. He was very popular in the court of Queen Elizabeth who referred to him as 'Gervase The Gentle'. He had a reputation as an impeccably courteous man 'of great authority in peace and war'. In 1544 he fought in France at the siege of Boulogne and in 1569 he defended Doncaster from a group of noblemen rebelling against Queen Elizabeth. His tomb chest is to be found St. Mary’s Church, adjacent to Clifton Hall.
A brief reference is made to Sir John Clifton in Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1. In Act 5, Scene 4 when Douglas casts doubt on King Henry's right to be King. Prince Henry interrupts them and Douglas flees, at which point the Prince conveys the news that Sir Nicholas Gawsey and Sir John Clifton have sent requests for support.
Clifton Hall and the manor of Clifton were also referenced in the Domesday Book of 1086.
