Originally the church is believed to have been a chapel erected by Wesleyan Methodist in 1816 which was subsequently enlarged in and around 1823 further enlarged in 1837 then subsequently rebuilt in 1863.

The church is of brick construction with stone dressings to the sills and rounded arched headers under a pitched roof with slated tile covering having prominent gable and parapet to West Street.
